about        :        born and raised under ozai and ursa, azula was trained to be a warrior and showed herself to be immensely gifted for her age. although she managed to properly appease her father's expectations, her relationship with her mother fell short as she was considered a "monster" in her eyes, a rift forming between them. this offended her deeply, but she was too young to understand it and instead projected her emotions onto tormenting her brother, zuko. it birthed a complex dynamic where she held some form of regard for him, but only on her terms.her fires burned blue, reminiscent of her ancestor, azulon, whom she was also name after. azula's goals lined up with her father's the older she got, and the more entitled she became to his approval and praise. anything that went against what she was trained to understand was seen as betrayal. to conquer the world and to be acknowledged fully was her ultimate goal, and it began to shift from an ideal put upon her by her father, to a yearning of her own. however, as she came closer to becoming precisely what she wanted, it fell under circumstances she never expected and therefore forced her to view her placement as a curse, as punishment. the war became something much more personal and destructive, her sanity dwindling. as her methods of control began to fall apart, so did she.

books 1-3        :        this follows the show's canon books 1-3, where azula's been training her entire life to rule and takes over as general, on the frontlines of the war with fire nation against the world. she spends most of it tracking down the avatar and her brother. it ends with her losing her sanity, and the agni kai with zuko.post-war        :                azula was institutionalized in a highly classified hospital, kept only with the highest security and the core focus of the hospitals mission. with only her brother and her uncle as visitors at first, she fell in a hole of shame and guilt, disappointment and fear from the potential backlash of her failure. even though talks of her father being defeated reached her and she was consoled, reassured that nobody was coming after her, she refused to believe it was truly over. her entire life preparing for one moment, and it was taken away in an instant.the hospital she was in, albeit a prison, was far nicer than any home she’d been in, void of fear and threats. the solitary forced her to dwell on her thoughts when she wasn’t meeting with a healer. her mental breakdown had been her downfall and she was constantly replaying events of her failed agni kai. after two years, she was released after passing her mental exam and released into society with the exceptions of house confinement — arrest — under zuko watch and responsibility. she either remains at the palace or follows him alongside his missions/meetings/reunions. afer much trial and error and multiple attempts of sabotage, that spark of hers has dwindled and calmed, allowing herself to truly open up to the prospect of healing. eventually, she’s trusted again ( not without much opposition from quite literally everyone ) and put in charge of home-base missions and guidance, keeping orders in balance. she’s still one of the best military strategists and is often assisting with plans and guidance.

main        :        s1.     catra starts out as a horde solider, slacking but still working her way through the trainings and coming out on top. after adora leaves the horde, she gets promoted to force captain and is tasked to track adora down and bring her back to the fright zone. however, after realizing that adora was never coming back, catra shifted her priorities to truly destroying the rebellion, and destroying adora. she strives to work through the ranks of the horde, seeking to usurp shadow weaver’s position after feeling she was incompetent in bringing the horde to success. catra threw herself into her job, hell-bent on wanting to prove herself, eventually succeeding when hordak promotes her to his second in-command, his right hand, ultimately replacing shadow weaver.s2.     catra continues working on ways to effectively and efficiently defeat the rebellion, her rage and hatred and determination rising. she’s hordak’s right hand, and has been working to gain his trust even further. she, however, still has a weak spot for shadow weaver and hesitates when hordak orders her to dispose of shadow weaver on beast island, momentarily letting her guard down, catra believed shadow weaver really cared for her and she planned to help her escape. the plan failed, as shadow weaver used her and left her behind, leaving her to get punished by hordak and imprisoned.s3.     though she was initially sentenced to death by hordak and set to be made into an example, he decides to send her to the crimson waste to recover an artifact, where he believed she wouldn’t make it out alive. on an apparent suicide mission, catra effectively maneuvers the crimson waste and defeats a gang leader, immediately establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with and gained the respect of fellow gang members in the crimson waste. she ends up capturing adora in the crimson waste, bringing her back to the fright zone. it was soon discovered that adora’s sword was the key to opening a portal that had been long in the making, but even though she’d been warned that opening the portal would send them into an alternate reality that’d eventually wipe everyone out, she still turned the switch. the alternate reality commenced, where she initially had no memories, but quickly caught on and tried to kill adora. she’s thrown out and the alternate reality is ceased by adora.s4.     catra throws herself completely in her work, deciding to give up on playing nice and asserted herself as a true leader, surpassing hordak and demanding that they conquer etheria once and for all, to impress hordak’s brother. because she becomes so focused on trying to destroy the rebellion and etheria, she grows restless and wears herself out, barely sleeping and growing increasingly paranoid. the dawning of everyone’s imminent betrayal and abandonment gets to her, where she believes everyone hates her and that she’s truly alone. the horde expands its territory, where she thrives on their success. however, she gets into a fight with hordak and wins, only to be defeated by being called out for her own personal issues and undergoes an existential crisis.s5.      aboard horde prime’s ship, she initially works to rise in the ranks as she did with hordak and tries to make herself a valuable player. this falls short. she starts to realize that she no longer wants to be the “bad” guy, and saves glimmer as one attempt to do something good. she’s punished and chipped by horde prime for her betrayal, where she loses all autonomy and is under his control. she dies after she falls off the ledge in horde prime’s ship, eventually rescued by adora and brought to darla. she awakens shortly on the ship, unaware that she died and came back. she spends her time healing from the fall and after having her chip removed. she becomes close with the people she once sought to hurt, and joins the rebellion to fight horde prime and save etheria. she inadvertently saves adora, who then saves all of etheria by defeating horde prime.post - series        :        with the current war over, catra is forced to rediscover herself. she’s never had the choice to truly understand herself nor what she wanted out of life. although initially reluctant, she attempts to make amends. residing in bright moon, she leads point on the effort to re-educate what’s left of the horde, to undo horde rhetoric. later on, she joins the queensguard / military equivalent, where she primarily operates as a strategist. she also embarks on foreign missions.
